Charleston County
City of Charleston
Recognized by Stacker.com as the Fastest Growing City in South Carolina.
Welcome to South Carolina’s warm Southern hospitality and smiling faces, Charleston (“The Holy City”). Founded in 1670 and is the birthplace of opera in 1735. It is the oldest and second-largest city in South Carolina. Charleston is still a city where horse-drawn carriages can be heard clicking over cobblestone streets while passengers marvel over the 18th and 19th-century antebellum architectural designs of homes and buildings. It makes sense that Charleston established the first golf club (Harleston Green) in 1786.
Did you know that Charleston is the homeport of NOAA’s Ronald H. Brown (P104) blue water oceanographic and atmospheric research vessel? The vessel was named to honor the first African American Secretary of Commerce. The global P104 is seldom in port at Charleston. Learn more about the P104 here.
Don’t leave the Lowcountry without enjoying a shrimp and grits breakfast!! Afterward, enjoy the Charleston Museum and the Charleston’s International African American Museum which recently opened. Visit The Emanuel African American Episcopal Church which was established in 1816 and is the oldest AME church in the South.
Catch a ferry to Fort Sumter where the first shots of the civil war were fired in April 1861. Visit the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston to see the Hunley submarine which sank the Housatonic in 1864.
Take a day or more to enjoy Charleston’s pristine beaches: Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, Edisto Beach, and Seabrook Island.
Don’t forget, Charleston doesn’t close when the sun goes down so enjoy the nightlife all around you.
Glad you are here, enjoy!
